Travelling by train these days is expensive. So, if there is any possible way to save a few pounds on the overall cost of a ticket it's well worth looking into.
With this in mind it may be a good idea to investigate the totally legal practice of 'ticket-splitting'.
What is 'ticket-splitting'?
Simply put, instead of buying one ticket for your whole journey, you buy more than one. You stay on the train but hold those extra tickets.
Let's say for example you want to travel from Milton Keynes to Southampton.
If you bought a day-return ticket it would cost you £90.90, but by splitting your ticket you would only pay...£68.90, making the cost of your journey 24.2% cheaper. And if you use a railcard the savings will be even greater.
If you think that all this sounds just too complicated to bother with, don't worry. There is a website that will do all the calculations for you with no fees to pay. Simply input the information regarding your forthcoming journey and let the website do the rest.
Trainsplit.com claim that 87 per cent of journeys booked on their site result in a saving compared to 44 per cent on the Trainline.
