Are Rail Passengers Being Ripped Off by Complex Ticket Pricing Structures?

UK Railway News

Christian Woolmar, author of a series of books on railway history, who writes a fortnightly column for Rail magazine and is a member of campaign group, Railfuture, certainly thinks so, saying: "Passengers are getting ripped off.  The pricing is completely incomprehensible."

Meanwhile, Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which? said: "It should be easier for passengers to find the cheapest tickets for their journey.

"It's absurd that some train companies are still making passengers do all the hard work to find out how to get the cheapest fares".

One example of this complicated state of affairs is highlighted on Virgin train services from London the Manchester where prices for a standard ticket were £73 on one journey to £20 on another.

While a second example sees passengers travelling on CrossCountry trains between Leeds and Bristol being offered a "cheapest" fare available on one Christmas Eve service for £110.80, while only two days later the same journey would cost a mere £32.80.

A study by the Department for Transport (DfT) shows more than two thirds of passengers admit to being unclear over the bewildering variations in ticket prices.

So can things ever get simpler for rail ticket buyers?  Perhaps they might.

It is understood that the rail regulator will be sending out warnings to some rail operators in the coming weeks, ordering them to simplify prices available online.  Though at present it is not clear which train companies will be targeted.
