UK Railways - Pensioner Railway Enthusiast Photographed Every Railway Station in Britain

Railway enthusiast pensioner David Brewer, 68, has recently achieved a personal ambition to photograph every railway station within the UK

Railway Enthusiast Clicked At Every Station He Visited

Former railway worker and railway enthusiast, pensioner David Brewer, 68, has recently completed a personal ambition that has taken him to the four corners of mainland Britain to photograph every railway station in the UK.

His target was reached when he snapped the 15.52 train from Norwich to Liverpool Lime Street passing through the tiny station of Manea, Cambridgeshire, on the 9th May 2016, served by Abellio Greater Anglia.

Speaking about his eight-year hobby, Mr. Brewer said that Redcar British Steel was probably the most difficult to reach.  The station, used solely by the steel works employees, has only two services a day and special permission had to be obtained to photograph on the site.

So, is this the end of David Brewer's photographic travels?  Apparently not.  He is now photographing every station on the London Underground system.

Rare Heritage Railway 'Thumper' DEMU Destroyed By Fire

Heritage Railway News

A rare former Southern Railway diesel multiple unit, valued at around £100,000, was attacked by vandals and destroyed by fire in May 2016.

Mindless Vandals Consign 'Thumper' To History

A vintage 'Thumper' DEMU train, owned by the Swindon and Cricklade Railway and valued at around £100,000, was completely destroyed by fire in May 2016.

The 2-car 'Thumper', (so nicknamed by railway enthusiasts due to the noise the diesel engine made while running) DEMU, believed to be one of only three working units in preservation after withdrawal from Southern Railway service with British Railways, was parked up near the Hayes Knoll end of the line when the fire was discovered.

Dave Peacey, a trustee of the Swindon and Cricklade Railway, said: "It is completely beyond repair.  We are all devastated to say the least".

Three box wagons parked nearby containing electrical equipment were also destroyed.  It appears that the fire may have started in one of these and spread to the train.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

London's Lea Bridge Station Reopens After 30 Years

UK Railway Station News

Since lying disused since 1985, Lea Bridge railway station reopened for business once again on the 16 May 2016. Now passengers travelling to Stratford or Tottenham Hale can reach their destination in five minutes

After lying disused since 1985, Lea Bridge railway station in East London has reopened (16 May 2016) enabling passengers to reach either Stratford or Tottenham Hale in five minutes, with northbound services continuing on to Bishops Stortford.

The newly-opened railway station will provide passengers short travel times, compared to the journeys currently undertaken by bus which takes around 40 minutes.

Abellio Greater Anglia, who operate a number of train services across London and the South-East, will run the services at Lea Bridge station.

The original station was opened on the 15th September 1840 by the Northern and Eastern Railway as Lea Bridge Road and constructed in the Italianate style designed by Sancton Wood.

The station originally featured a bell turret complete with bell that rang out when a train was due.

The station building was demolished around 1976 when the station became an unstaffed halt.  The last train was formed of a two-car Craven Class 105 DMU.

Merchant Navy Class Locomotive Nameplate Unveiling Event at G&WSR Railway

Heritage Railway News

Steam locomotive, 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S.N.Co', formerly a workhorse of the Southern Railway, recently starred in naming ceremony at the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway, hosted by pop icon, Pete Waterman.

Pop! Goes The Whistle

Nearly 500 people recently attended the unveiling of the former Southern Railway Merchant Navy Class Pacific locomotive, 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co', at Toddington, home of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway following an immense years-long overhaul providing a glimpse of times past and a bygone era.

John McMillan, P&O Locomotive Society chairman, opened the day's proceedings and GWSR's president, celebrity and record producer, Pete Waterman, unveiled the locomotive's nameplate.

One of 30 engines of the class to built, all named after shipping lines that used Southampton Docks, 35006 was salvaged from Dai Woodham's scrapyard in Wales, where she had stood rusting away since her withdrawal in the 1960's, and brought to the GWSR - then in its infancy - in 1983.

David Brown, a locomotive fireman in the 1960's based at Yeovil, worked P&O's final journey on a mail train from Yeovil to Eastleigh, then returned it to its home depot of Salisbury.

The locomotive will make its public debut at the Cotswold Festival of Steam at the GWSR from 28th to 30th May.

Full details are available on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Steam Railway website.
