At first an exciting novelty which soon became an undesirable encounter. Even as a small (11 plus) child it was claustrophobic, with modern fire regulation it would certainly not pass muster. Nevertheless I am pleased that some of these unique carriages remain even if in a decrepit state.The_Malukahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12666168391129859179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8055597542081893523.post-70622544879725435662020-10-23T13:17:58.561+01:002020-10-23T13:17:58.561+01:00I remember travelling on this in the ‘60s from Wel...I remember travelling on this in the ‘60s from Welling to Charing Cross going to my first job. I also remember sportsLadies Only compartment. A chap would run for the train and then realise where he was and got off the next station! The carriage was at the beginning of the train and I loved it. So pleased it is preservation and hope it eventually sports it’s olive green livery. It was hidden in the sidings and obscured by a thick hedge and I really could not work out what such a strange carriage was for. Revisiting in winter when the hedgerow was bare and I had a better view I found a dim and distant recollection of an illustration of a double-decker unit I had seen in an old railway book in my childhood some 60 years ago. Thanks to Google I found this blog article and others Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06342680169127994738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8055597542081893523.post-35909835594468154852016-05-14T05:00:43.702+01:002016-05-14T05:00:43.702+01:00I travelled regularly on this train during the sec...I travelled regularly on this train during the second half of the 1960s, when it was used during the rush hour on the Bexleyheath line. The downstairs section was very cramped, with very little room for bags. Upstairs was relatively pleasant on cool days, but the air conditioning system couldn't cope with the summer heat, and as the upstairs windows didn't open, it would become very hot and stuffy. The train was something of a nightmare when passengers were also standing, making the carriage very claustrophobic.

I do remember there was a Ladies Only compartment at the end of the train. I was travelling with my father one evening, and we only just caught the train, piling rather embarrassingly into the Ladies' compartment. My father was not easily embarrassed. Does anybody mind if I smoke, he asked, and receiving only blank stares from the assembled Ladies, puffed happily on his pipe all the way to Bexleyheath. It was a different world...Kennoreply@blogger.com
