From the 20th July to the 27th September, 89 giant owl art structures could be found in the streets across the city of Birmingham; each owl individually decorated by a different artist.

This event known as 'The Big Hoot 2015', sponsored by various local businesses and organisations, culminated with a sale-by-auction of the attractive owls with all money raised going to the Birmingham's Children's Hospital.

From June to September in 2022, a similar event - The Big Hoot 2022 -  is to be held in Ipswich, Suffolk, to raise money for the St. Elizabeth Hospice.

In total, 40 designed and illustrated 'Big Hoot' owls will be placed around the historic town.

Govia Thameslink Trains, Class 700003 electric multiple unit photo seen on the night of the 18th April 2018 at Bedford station about to head south, was built by Siemens at Krefeld, Germany.

Introduced onto the UK railway network between 2016 and 2018, the Siemens DesiroCity Class 700 was manufactured in two train lengths; 8 and 12-car units. A total of 115 trainsets.

8-car units are numbered 700001 – 700060.

12-car units are numbered 700101 – 700155.

In order to update the rolling stock on the Govia Thameslink line, the Class 700 replaced classes 319, 377 and 387 EMUs which were placed elsewhere on the network.

In order for the trains to operate on 'third-rail' routes, for example those in Kent, Surrey and Hampshire the 700s were constructed to draw electric power from two sources – the overhead Pantograph system (AC) and the Contact Shoe 'third-rail' system (DC).

Thameslink Trains operate its fleet from Bedford, Luton, St.Albans City, Peterborough, Cambridge; then via central London to Sutton, Orpington, Sevenoaks, Rainham, Horsham and Brighton.

Additional services to East Grinstead and Littlehampton operate during peak times.

A train operator serving a total of 115 stations with 115 electric multiple units.

UK Desiro Trains List:

The UK 'family' of Desiro diesel or electric passenger trains also include classes – 185 DMU, 350/1, 350/2, 350/3, 350/4, 360/1, 360/2, 380/0, 380/1, 444, 450, 707, 717.

Chiltern Railways Trains Clubman Class 168215 (effectively a Class 170) diesel multiple unit, built by Adtranz/Bombardier at Derby, waits at Banbury station - offering an ideal night photo opportunity - in August 2012.

Resembling the Class 165 dmu unit, the Class 168 UK passenger trains were manufactured in several batches from 1987 to a total build of 19 trainsets.  Further builds, were classed as 168/1 and 168/2.
Due to the fact that the class was built at the same time as the Class 170 Turbostar they were regarded as part of the Turbostar family of trains.

Chiltern Railways ordered the first batch of Clubman carriages which were delivered in 3-car sets.  Later these sets were lengthened to 4-cars.

When Chiltern Railways obtained nine trainsets from First TransPennine Express, the trains were converted to operate with the Class 168 fleet and redesignated as Class 168/3.

Leamington Spa station, which also sees passenger train services operated by Chiltern Railways, London Midland Trains (now West Midlands Trains) and a fair amount of through freight traffic, seems almost deserted on what was a lovely summer's evening for trainspotting and photographing trains.

Class 43157 Intercity 125, 'Yorkshire Evening Post' Peterborough Station

Photo:  Charles Moorhen

UK Class 43157 'Yorkshire Evening Post' Intercity 125 High Speed Train is seen in this night photo at Peterborough station in December 1988.

According to the NREA 'The Spotter's Companion' for 2004, Intercity 125 43157 had by this time lost its name.

Note the Post Office trolleys on the platform to the right of the picture.  These, and the Post Office workers who made use of them, were once a very common sight on railway stations throughout Britain.
Now, just a part of railway history.

Diesel power unit Class 43157 has now been re-numbered and is operating as one of the Cross Country Trains fleet as Class 43357.  Its name has been removed.

uk intercity 125 was originally numbered 43157 but is now numbered 43357 and operates in cross county trains livery
Class 43357 in Cross Country Livery

The Peterborough train image (top) was the first long exposure night photo of a train that I had ever taken.  I used a Pentax 35mm camera.

Not possessed of a tripod at the time, I had to improvise with a platform trolley, similar to the example to the right of the picture, and balance the camera upon that to get the shot.

News Update:
Seeing East Midlands Trains colourful livery of red, white, orange and red flashing along the railway tracks, will soon become a thing of the past.

Abellio will take over the East Midlands Trains franchise on Saturday 18th August 2019. The Class 43 HST Intercity 125 and Class 222 diesel multiple unit will gradually be phased out by brand new Hitachi trains that will be a variant of the bullet-nosed Class 800 bio-mode DMU.

The new trains will have a lavender livery and be branded with 'EMR' on both sides.
