Delayed Rail Passengers Can Now Claim Compensation in Cash

UK Railway News

Train operators have changed their policy regarding compensation for travellers affected by delays.

In place of vouchers to be used for payment of future rail journeys, passengers will now be able to claim their compensation in cash.

A Rail Delivery Group spokesman said, "Planned changed to the national rail conditions or carriage will enable passengers to claim their compenstation in cash, instead of rail vouchers.  This will be a welcome move for passengers".

In February, it was revealed that rail passengers were claiming for only a fraction of the journeys on which they had been delayed.

Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which?, said: "As ticket prices continue to rocket, train operators must do more to improve levels of satisfaction and to inform people of their right to a refund as a result of delays."

Virgin Trains Installing More Standard Class Seats on Pendolinos

UK Railway News

The conversion of one First Class carriage on the nine-car trains will see an extra 76 Standard Class seats introduced on each Pendolino, with only 46 First Class seats being removed.

“Our main focus is always our customers and their needs,” Phil Whittingham, managing director at Virgin Trains said. “We have seen demand for our services increase significantly, with more than 34 million journeys made on our trains last year, something that we are very proud of.

Converting these First Class carriages to Standard allows us to respond to requests from passengers for more seats on our busiest routes. We’ve also given our Pendolinos a well-deserved spring clean and remain as committed as ever to improving the service we offer to our customers.”

The work is taking place at Alstom’s depot in Oxley, Wolverhampton, with one train completed a week and all trains due to be converted by September this year.
After the fleet of nine-car trains have been upgraded, the remaining 35 11-car Pendolinos will also undergo a major interior refresh and a deep clean with the full Pendolino fleet completed by mid-2016.
