Photographed in a bay platform at Rugby stationVirgin Trains UK Thunderbird diesel locomotive Class 57316 'Fab 1' was built in March 1966 as a basic Class 47 at either Brush Traction, Loughborough, or BR Crewe Works; one of a total of 512 produced.

The loco did not become a named engine until the 20th December 2004, whereupon it bore the name 'Fab 1 - Thunderbirds' as in the photo above.
It lost its name five years later in January 2009.

57316 is a re-engineered diesel loco rebuilt by Brush Traction, Loughborough, using parts from redundant Class 47 locos.
The Class 57s were fitted with a refurbished EMD engine and a re-conditioned alternator which greatly improved performance and reliability.

Before conversion to a Class 57,this former Class 47 was numbered, 47290.

After fifty-six years on the rails, diesel locomotive Class 57316 continues in service operated by West Coast Railways bearing the company's maroon livery.

Looking smart in its Virgin Trains livery, UK Thunderbirds diesel locomotive, Class 57305 'John Tracy', built in 1964 poses for a photo in a bay platform (now filled in) at Rugby station.

Before being converted to a Class 57, the locomotive was in service as 47822.

In 2002 it was carrying the name 'Pride of Shrewsbury'.  The loco has carried four names in its career; 'Alan Tracy - Thunderbirds, John Tracy - Thunderbirds, 'Pride of Shrewsbury', and 'Northern Princess'.

At some point in the 1990s the loco carried no name at all,

Class 221142 Virgin Voyager diesel electric multiple unit, photographed on a wet, stormy evening, as can be seen by the threatening clouds above the train, stands in Rugby railway station on the 2nd September 2012 whilst en route with a scheduled service to Wolverhampton.

This tilting 5-car diesel electric multiple unit UK passenger train, known as a Super Voyager, was built between 2001 and 2002 by Bombardier Transportation.

Since Virgin Trains lost it franchise in December 2019, this and other West Coast Main Line Class 221 Voyager units are operated by Avanti West Coast.

As I typed the words, Rugby station, I was reminded of its connection with the world-famous author, Charles Dickens and of his fictional, Mugby Junction, (the name inspired by Rugby station).

Finding himself at the Warwickshire station during a reading tour in 1866, Charles Dickens and a companion entered its refreshment room.  While Dickens' companion searched in his pockets for the correct change with which to pay for the coffee the pair had ordered, the novelist reached out to take hold of the milk and sugar.

However, before he could lay his hands on the items, they were whisked out of reach by the counter assistant who said, "You sha'nt have any milk and sugar, 'till you two fellows have paid for your coffee".

No celebrity worship there then!

Apparently the counter assistant had not recognised the esteemed writer.

The incident made it into one of the 'Mugby Junction' stories.

Class 92038 Eurotunnel Diesel Locomotive 'Voltaire'

Class 92038 UK diesel locomotive named after 'Voltaire', the French writer, historian and philosopher, poses for a photo in European Passenger Services two-tone grey livery, parked up in a bay platform at Rugby station in April 2012.

The class 92 diesel locomotives were built between 1993 and 1995 by Brush Traction at Loughborough.  92038 was completed in October 1995.

It is fitted with TVM430 signalling equipment enabling it to operate on High Speed 1.

The Class 92 locos were designed specifically to operate services through the Channel Tunnel between France and Britain, and have dual-voltage in order to run from overhead power cables (25 kV AC) or the third rail (750 V DC).

The fleet numbers of 92s ran from 92001 to 92046 with the majority being named after famous writers or composers/musicians, such as 92022 Charles Dickens, 92002 H.G. Wells and 92043 Debussy.
At the time of this update, (2020), 13 of the class have been exported for use abroad - and 92038 'Voltaire' has lost its name.

As the sun shines on the Warwickshire town of Rugby, UK Freightliner Heavy Haul diesel locomotive Class 66551 stands in a bay platform of Rugby station.

Unfortunately the identity of the other Freightliner locomotive is unknown.

A photograph such as this would be virtually impossible these days owing to the profusion of safety barriers that now exist at Rugby station.

This image was taken shortly before the station was modernised between 2006 and 2008.

Freightliner Class 66551 locomotive was built by General Motors Electo-Motive Division (EMD) in December 2001.

Night Photo Class 390122 Virgin Pendolino EMU Train Rugby 2016

Class 390122 EMU, 'Penny the Pendolino' Rugby Train Station

A sleek-looking Virgin Trains Pendolino, Class 390122 (formerly 390022) electric 11-car multiple unit (EMU), seen at night carrying the name 'Virgin Star', pauses at Rugby station before speeding along the West Coast Main Line towards its destination - London Euston in August 2016.

Around 2018 the train was renamed 'Penny the Pendolino', by Virgin staff, and its nameplate fitted without ceremony at Wembley depot.

To date 'Penny' is the leading Pendolino with the highest mileage attained.

With a design speed of 140 mph (225 km/h), though actually restricted to 125 mph (200 km/h) while in service, the Class 390 Pendolino tilting trains were introduced July 2002.

Built at Washwood Heath, England and Savigliano, Italy, these electric multiple units replaced three class of locomotive classes previously providing the motive power for the services that the Class 390s now operate; Class 86, Class 87 and the Class 90.

In all 57 train-sets were manufactured, though Class 390033 'City of Glasgow' was scrapped after serious damage caused as a result of its derailment at Grayrigg, Cumbria, on the 23rd February 2007.

Faulty points were blamed for the derailment which resulted in the death on one passenger and injury to 88 others.

Pendolino News Update:
The final Virgin Pendolino will leave Manchester Piccadilly on a scheduled service to London Euston at 8.35pm on the 7th December 2019.  And at 11.39pm, the last Virgin arrival from Euston should arrive at Piccadilly.

After that, Virgin Trains will no longer run on the West Coast Mainline (WCM), 22 years after Sir Richard Branson launched the rail franchise.

First Group and Trenitalia, operating as Avanti West Coast, will run scheduled services on the WCM until 2031.

Night Photo Class 390128 'City of Preston' Virgin Trains Pendolino EMU Rugby 2016

Class 390128 'City of Preston' Pendolino EMU, Rugby Station

Colourful Night Photo of Pendolino Class 390128 electric multiple unit at rugby station England 2016

Photo: Charles Moorhen

Virgin Trains Pendolino Class 390 128 'City of Preston' EMU, built by Alstom, stands in Rugby station on the evening of the 25th August 2016; the same rainy night that I had photographed locomotives EWS Class 66013 and Freightliner Class 66502.  Class 390128 unit coach numbers are as follows: 69128  69428  69528  69628  65328  68928  68828  69728  69828  69928  69228.

And got fairly wet in the process!

Once again, dashing between sudden downpours, I managed to scamper with camera and tripod from one platform to another in order to get this shot.  Thinking all the time...I'm going to trip over, I'm going to trip over!

How hectic it all seems at the time when one is trying to set up a tripod and adjust the camera to the correct settings for a night photo, while all the time being aware that the time for the train to depart and the camera to record the scene is quickly running out.

But, all said and done, I believe that is was worth it in the end!

***********************

Looking at the amount of artificial light in the photo above, it started me thinking.

When one considers how brightly lit railway stations are nowadays, it is difficult to imagine how stark the comparison would be with the standard of lighting back in the days of the Victorian railways, and how hazardous it must have been travelling at night back then.

During the Victorian era, station name-boards, although larger than they are today, were difficult to see at the best of times.  Especially from a moving train at night, maybe in fog, or worst of all - both.

The style that the Victorians favoured was dark lettering on a lighter background - not the ideal choice for sign which would instantly catch the eye.  And at night the sign would be illuminated by the feeble glow from a gas lamp.

The unfortunate result of this combination led to a large number of instances whereupon rail passengers alighted from a railway carriage only to find that they had done so at the wrong station.

However, far more serious were the occasions which led to a number of serious injuries and fatalities resulting from an unsuspecting passenger stepping from a railway carriage, only to find that there was nothing beneath their feet fresh air; the train having merely stopped temporarily at a signal.

Without doubt today's railways have a lot to answer for, one way and another, but it has to be said that at least we are safer and more fortunate than many of our Victorian predecessors were.

Just a passing thought.

Photo British Rail Diesel Shunter Loco Class 08909 Bay Platform Rugby 1988

Class 08909 BR Shunter, Rugby Station

photo of british rail diesel shunter class 08909 in br blue livery in a bay platform at rugby railway station England in 1988

Once a common sight pottering around Rugby station, British Rail  Class 08909, built between 1952 and 1962 and allocated to Bletchley TMD, in BR blue livery, similar in design to its sister Class 09 is seen parked up in one of the station's bay platforms at the eastern end in November 1988.

The condition of Rugby station roof is a sad testament to how derelict the station canopy had become before its refurbishment that was to come years later.

Class 08909 diesel shunter loco survived until 2011 when it was sent to C.F. Booth's for scrapping on the 10th August of that year.

A total of 996 examples of the Class 08 diesel, or 'Gronks' as they were nicknamed by the railway enthusiast fraternity, were produced for British Railways.

Class 08 Shunter Historical Note:
At Tinsley Marshalling Yard near Sheffield, UK, six '08' shunters were coupled in three pairs for shunting operations.  In each pair one locomotive cab was removed; its power controlled from the 'cabbed' 08.  This combination of power units were classified as Class 13.
The three pairs worked together in Tinsley Yard for twenty years until early 1985 when hump-shunting came to an end.

They were numbered thus:
D4500 (D3698  D4188), D4501 (D4189  D4190), D4502 (D3696  D4187).

Night Photo Class 66013 and 66502 GM Diesel Locos Rugby 2016

Class 66013 & 66502 at Rugby Lit By Lamps

Night Photo of EWS Freight diesel locomotive class 66013 pauses briefly at rugby station England 2016

Class 66013 was built in October 1998 and allocated to Toton TMD (Notts.).

Photographing a Class 66 diesel locomotive, or any other class for that matter, alongside a platform at Rugby railway station at night has, for one reason or another, always been out of reach for me.

At least that was the position prior to the 25th August 2016 when everything changed.

I was visiting Rugby station on that day photographing the station buildings on a windy, rainy night.

At one point during the evening I was sheltering beneath the platform canopy waiting while a shower of rain to pass by before venturing out into the open once more.

Glancing towards the southern end of the platform I saw EWS Class 66013 diesel freight locomotive coming slowly into the station, stopping about 25 yards from where I was standing; my camera on its tripod stood close by and ready for action.

As I jotted down the number I noticed someone jump from the cab and walk towards one of the nearby station buildings.  Was it the driver?

I didn't wait to find out.  Grabbing camera and tripod I ran as fast as was safely possible towards the EWS liveried freight locomotive.  At the instant the tripod feet settled on the platform surface I saw a man - the driver or new driver? - leaving the same building.  Would I have time to grab a shot?

Knowing I would need around twenty seconds exposure for a photograph I framed, focused as fast as I could, prayed, and hit the shutter button.

The seconds crawled by and I willed them to move quicker towards the magic 20 seconds.  I was certain that Class 66 66013 would begin to move before the time was up.

Finally exposure time was up and the shutter closed with a satisfying click.  I'd done it!

But this was not the end of capturing a diesel locomotive on my camera that night.

A short while later, after photographing Virgin Trains Class 390 128, I was amazed to be going through the whole nerve-shredding process again.  I could hardly believe my luck.

The second time the diesel locomotive in question was Freightliner liveried Class 66 66502 'Basford Hall Centenary 2001'.

As I headed home that night, damp and happy, a random thought kept running through my mind - 'photograph one, get one free!'

Class 66502 was built in July 1999 and allocated to Leeds Midland Road TMD.
