Unidentified Class 222 UK passenger train diesel multiple unit train in striking blue and white Midland Mainline livery stands in Wellingborough station in the early 2000s.

This train livery was superseded by the colourful East Midlands Trains livery when the company took over the franchise.

With the capability of a top speed of 125 mph, and the ability of travelling 1,350 miles (2,170 km) between each refuelling, the Class 222 diesel multiple unit has been in mainline service since 2004.

Built for Midland Mainline and Hull Trains, and at time of writing operated by East Midlands Railway by Bombardier Transportation in Bruges, Belgium, a total of 27 sets were manufactured.

Although the Class 222s are fitted with the same Dellner couplers as those on the Class 220 Voyager DMU and Class 221 SuperVoyager DMU, they cannot work together in one train as the electrical connections are not compatible with the 220s and the 221s.

Due to their superior acceleration, the Class 222 DMUs replaced all of the Class 170 DMUs and a number of Class 43 Intercity 125 HST on the Midland Mainline.

This photo of UK Intercity 125 Class 43082 high speed train power car, in Midland Mainline livery, was taken as the train from London St. Pancras was standing in Wellingborough station before continuing on northwards.

Class 43082  Intercity 125 passenger train, whose depot is Neville Hill T&RSMD (Leeds), was built Crewe Works in 1978.

On the 10/11/1997 the power car was named Derbyshire First,  then in 30/11/2004 it had the name removed until on the 13/9/2009 it was renamed The Voice of Street Children Worldwide.  In the 2019 Platform 5 Pocket Book it is recorded as bearing the name, Railway Children - Fighting for street children.

News Update:
Seeing East Midlands Trains colourful livery of red, white, orange and red flashing along the railway tracks, will soon become a thing of the past.
Abellio will take over the East Midlands Trains franchise on Saturday 18th August 2019. The Class 43 HST Intercity 125 and Class 222 diesel multiple unit will gradually be phased out by brand new Hitachi trains that will be a variant of the bullet-nosed Class 800 bio-mode DMU.
The new trains will have a lavender livery and be branded with 'EMR' on both sides.

Running virtually 'light' UK British Rail Class 31130 diesel locomotive, in BR Railfreight livery, hauls a lone former British Railways brake van through Wellingborough station on a summer's day in the 1990s.

Built in 1959 at Brush Traction, Loughborough, UK, Class 31130 was  originally number D5548 and based at Ipswich shed.

31130, now carrying the name Calder Hall Power Station, is one of two Class 31 diesel locomotives based at the Avon Valley Railway, Bath Road, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, BS30 6HD.

Class 31 Diesel Locomotive Historical Note:
Whilst hauling a train in which Queen Elizabeth II was travelling on 4th January 1961, D5667 (31240), broke down south of Cambridge.

Two onboard Brush fitters, on hand to deal with any mechanical problems that may occur, were unable to fix the problem and a steam loco had to be sent for in order to rescue the stricken diesel adding over an hour to the completed journey.

Approaching Wellingborough railway station, UK Intercity 125 High Speed Train Class 43057 in 'Swallow' livery, as it heads for its destination of London St. Pancras.

In 1988 Class 43057 this train was carrying the name, 'Bounds Green'.

Please note the oil-stained wooden crossing sleepers and lack of end-of-platform safety barriers in this pre-privatisation photo.

Crossing sleepers such as these were once commonplace across the British Railway network, enabling station staff to move items by hand trolley from one platform to another.

Although intended for railway station staff only, it was not unusual for passengers to use these crossings rather than walk up the steps of the station footbridge.

The two 'lollipop' lights only a few metres from the front of Class 43057 Intercity 125 carries a sign which reads, 'Caution  Cross Only When Light Showing'.

Note the use of warning lights each side of the track-crossing walking boards.  These lights are triggered, and go out as seen above, when a train passes over a certain part of the railway track whilst approaching the station.

The need for such lights were superflous when the platform ends with safety features such as barriers and 'black crocodile teeth' pads were installed.

Class 222015 DMU In Black & White

close b&w photo of meridian class 222015 diesel multiple unit about to enter wellingborough station England while heading north 2014

Photo: Charles Moorhen

In the summer of 2014 I visited Wellingborough railway station on the Midland Mainline to photograph the Grade II listed former Midland Railway goods shed situated at the 'London' end of platform one; something I had been meaning to do for a number of years.

Although the weather was slightly overcast I did manage to record enough images of the old building to make the trip worthwhile. (The results can be seen in a 'Along These Tracks' blog post by clicking here).

In addition to photographing this surprisingly well-preserved example of railway architecture, I also fired off a few frames of DMU's, locomotives and Intercity 125 Class 43's that came and went throughout my time at the station.

Noting that the available light was deteriorating as the day wore on, I reluctantly made the decision to pack up and go home.
However, as quickly as I had made that decision...I reversed it.

I was at the furthest point I could be at the southern end of platform one when the sound of a diesel engine attracted my attention. The noise came from an approaching East Midlands Trains Class 222 DMU.

It was obvious from its speed that it was a stopping service, but, even so, the distance between train and station was shortening rapidly.

Would it be worthwhile going for the shot I thought as I instinctively grabbed the camera from its bag? Class 222015 - one of a fleet of 27 trains sets - was by now making an impressive attempt at completely filling the frame by this time.

Acutely aware that the dmu was bearing down on me, I hastily checked the exposure, framed the shot, hit the shutter button – all in one panicky movement - and prayed as I was aware a second later of the air turbulence as 222015 swept by me.
Had I been too late? Would this shot become yet another victim of my camera delete button?

Fortunately, this time, there was no need for the dreaded delete button. As I examined the picture on the rear screen I saw that I had captured the only decent image of a train that day!

Class 222015 DMU was built between 2003 and 2005 and allocated to Derby Etches Park.
Class 222015 DMU unit coach numbers are as follows: 60255  60925  60635  60535  60175.

Night photo of East Midlands Trains, Class 222002 'The Cutlers' Company' , DMU, seen here at Wellingborough railway station in September 2016.

With Class 66005 in the background, this placed me in a bit of a quandary when it came to taking its photo.

At that particular time I was intent on photographing the Class 66 when a Class 222 DMU, - one of a fleet of 27 train sets - pulled into the station.

Glad that the Class 66 was safely stored on my camera memory card, I quickly re-positioned the tripod, reset the camera and prayed that the East Midlands Trains dmu would not move before the required amount of seconds had passed to produce an exposure.

Seconds passed by at the rate of one an hour as I nervously waited, holding my breath, and crossing for luck everything I had.

Luckily, photographing the Class 222 turned out ok with only a few seconds to spare before it began to move away.  A close look at its lights will show that it slipped back slightly before gaining grip.

Class 222002 DMU was built between 2004 and 2005 and allocated to Derby Etches Park. The unit coach numbers are as follows: 60242  60346  60342  60622  60562  60544  60162.
