More Frequent Trains Pledged Between Retford and Sheffield

UK Railway News

Class 144 Pacer DMU enters Retford station

In the wake of news that from April 2016 Arriva will be taking over from Northern Rail, it has been announced that Retford commuters will benefit from extra trains and shorter journey times as part of the take-over deal.

Arriva have committed themselves to providing half-hourly services, between Retford and Sheffield, by providing 20 additional trains (10 in each direction), replacing the hourly service operating at present between 7am and 7pm on weekdays.

It is said that the new timetable will mean that Worksop railway station will have the most frequent train services since it was opened in 1849.

Other changes as part of the Arriva deal are:

FASTER SERVICES - the extra trains between Sheffield and Worksop will call at intermediate stations, allowing the hourly Sheffield-Worksop-Retford service to run non-stop between Worksop and Sheffield, reducing the Retford to Sheffield journey time by up to 12 minutes by December 2019.

NEW TRAINS - most of the trains currently used on the line are 30-year-old Pacer trains. These will be replaced by 120 new trains while existing Sprinter trains are to be refurbished.

AN ENHANCED SUNDAY SERVICE - the current two-hourly service doesn't start until mid-afternoon.  By December 2017, the service will start in the morning and run every hour.

IMPROVED WEEKDAY SERVICES - the new specifications will see the number of trains between Sheffield and Worksop doubled, so that by December 2019, the service will run every 30 minutes throughout the day.
